Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Tata Toor Dal (pigeon pea lentils)

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1-2 dry red chilies (optional)
  • 1 tsp garam masala (optional)
  • 1-2 cups water (adjust as per desired consistency)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the dal: Wash the Toor Dal thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. Cook the dal: In a pressure cooker, add the dal, turmeric powder, and water (about 2 cups). Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy. You can also cook it in a pot, but it will take longer.

  3. Tempering (Tadka):

    • Heat oil or ghee in a pan.
    • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add dry red chilies (if using), followed by chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until fragrant.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and release oil.
    • Add slit green chilies, salt, and garam masala (if using), and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Combine: Once the dal is cooked, pour the tempering into the cooked dal. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes to blend the flavors.

  5. Garnish: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

  6. Serve: Serve the Toor Dal hot with rice or roti.
